The research project surveys the cultural assumption and values as well as the perception of foreigness within a binational german-moroccan family. How does the idea of culture and foreigness differ among family members, that live in the same household and share everyday life together?
Via semi-structured guided interviews every family member, which means both parents and two children, were consulted seperately. During the interview they were asked about their cultural understanding, the significance of culture in their daily routine and contentions and misunderstandings because of their cultural background.For the children, age 4 and 8, the questions were adapted in a children suitable way.
Though sharing everyday family life together, the perception of culture and diversity is very individual among family members. So the purpose was to figure out the personal perception and valuation of cultural aspects of every single family member and relating it to the rest of the family.

Recorded interview between three students in Germany. The two men (Master students from Iran and Peru) know each other, the woman (PhD student from Romania) is new in the group. Conversation was recorded in a living-room of one of the researchers for ensuring good recording conditions. Focus of the investigation was the transformation of stereotypes about Germany during their stay. Hypotheses: 1a) Before their arrival, the students have certain stereotypes about life in Germany. 1b) Before their arrival, the students have diverse concepts about their own cultures. 2a) When arriving in Germany, the students enhance their own culture in comparison to the German culture. 2b) When arriving in Germany, the students derogate the German culture in comparison to their own culture. 3) During their stay, they adopt certain German habits. This corpus consists of a selection of recordings gathered in context of the field-methods course on Balinese, winter term 2012/2013, at the University of Cologne.
These selected recordings serve as empirical data for the MA thesis "The suffix -ne in Balinese", by Lucas Haiduck.
The selection contains audio and video material, recorded on the 3rd of December 2012, with the language consultants Luh Anik Mayani and Nyoman Suyadni. The recordings include a folk story ("Bawang Kesuna") and various stimuli elicited materials, i.e. a Map Task, and four Space Games.
Parts of the transcription were produced by the students, in context of the class (the first two minutes of most recordings).
For usage in this thesis however, these transcriptions were modified to a great extend, and finished for all of the recordings.
Transcriptions and translations were worked on by Lucas Haiduck in collaboration with the language consultants Luh Anik Mayani and Nyoman Suyadni.

Because we study the master called "Intercultural communication and education", we wanted to take a critical perspective on the idea of intercultural communication and take a look on powerstructures that influenced the concept and that influence communication situations. We evolved the following research question: How does the concept of Intercultural Communication frame communication situations and which consequences does this have? To converge this question, we interviewed to experts, who work in so called intercultural settings or study a critical perspective on cultural concepts. One interview took place in the working office of the interviewed person. The other interview took place via Skype, the interviewed person was located Bremen, where she studies, the interviewer in Cologne.

Initially, hypotheses which could be derived by the previous findings were formulated, and accompanied by example sentences. What's in a word? The German word "Ausländer" (roughly translated as foreigner) carries various meanings and connotations for different users. This qualitative study examines what native and non-native speakers of German in Germany associate with the word, how they use it, and whether they agree with the legal definition of the noun. In semi-structured interviews with German-speakers from various backgrounds, we attempt to gain an understanding of the word "Ausländer" and it's role in the at once historically relevant and topical discourse surrounding migration and notions of nationality and belonging.

In the course session on the TAM-system of Balinese, the group (Kurt Malcher and Lucas Haiduck) prepared german sentences for eliciting tense, aspect, and mood phenomena.
